I setup this blog site to do some testing of different things and had no plans on doing anything but creating “test this”, “test that” and so on. Then I decided to go ahead and annotate whatever I did so I would have notes to return to when doing production configurations and possibly so someone else could benefit from what I experienced. If you happen by please don’t expect perfect notes and fancy results. Take what you can use and leave the rest. :)

Initially I installed WordPress 2.9.2 and FlexSqueeze and removed the Hello Dolly Plugin. Next I changed the permissions of all PHP & CSS files in /wp-content/themes/flexsqueeze to 777 to insure there would be no permission issues. I attempted to set FlexSqueeze to its “dark” setting, however, it did not change the appearance of the skin. I double the file permissions and repeated this the change to the dark setting several times with no change in the site appearance. I notified the author, Ryan Graberstein, and he recommended I check the permissions. Like a goof I forgot to tell him I’d already done this.

This evening I decided to play around with the settings a little bit to make some minor changes. One of the changes was to be installation of the PixoPoint Menu Plugin. I installed it and did a little setup. Then created some test categories, test sub-categories and test posts. I did NOT install the code changes outlined by Ryan. I then went to FlexSqueeze Options and changed the text and title for the default Top Side Bar (About this blog). When I clicked on Save Settings from this theme option the change to Dark suddenly took effect and now looks as it should. Obviously I’ll report this issue to the FlexSqueeze author.

I must say, I really love this theme! So many options can be quickly set rather than spending a bunch of time in the CSS and code. I’m glad I spent the $. Also, Ryan has been super about communicating with me one-on-one via email about some issues I’d run into on another blog I have configured with his incredible (and free!) Flexibility2 skin. You’ll appreciate the time you save if you get Flexibility2 or spend a small sum on the unlimited domain license for FlexSqueeze.

Cheers………
